England, 1920 — It's a rainy night outside the hallowed halls of Uptight Abbey when the body of Lord Horatio Uptight is discovered with a large knife in his back! Who committed the crime? And why? And will the whole matter be cleared up before the Dowager Duchess arrives for dinner? In this send-up, where Downton Abbey meets Agatha Christie to play Clue, the tried-and-true entertainment of the murder mystery gets a comical, theatrical twist as the Uptight family and their intrepid staff attempt to solve (and possibly confess to) the murder of Lord Uptight. It's an evening filled with devoted butlers, suspicious maids, conniving cousins, elderly eccentrics, and — above all — good grammar.

British accents of varying kinds are required for nearly every character. Refer to the following descriptions for specific requests and come prepared to give your best shot at the appropriate accent(s)!
Auditions will consist of selected cold readings from the script.

Role # 1 - Bakersman Submit yourself for this role
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role
Bakersman (20s) is an under-butler, brand new to the Abbey. He is jittery and unsure of his role and responsibilities — or could he be hiding something? Despite his desire to make a good impression, Bakersman is often flabbergasted that there's so much work to do around an 800-year-old abbey. Working class/cockney accent required. Physical comedy a plus.

Role # 2 - McDonald Submit yourself for this role
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role
McDonald(50s) is the stalwart head butler of the Abbey. Dry, smooth, relatively unflappable, he's a distant cousin to P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves. He believes one must adhere to a certain level of propriety. He is subtly enamored of Lady Daphne, catering to her every whim. He's also a bit of a drinker. Proper/upper class accent required. Physical comedy a plus.

Role # 3 - Mrs. Yews Submit yourself for this role
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role
MRS. YEWS (any age, but probably 50s) is the head of household, and she runs a tight ship. There's a bit of Daphne du Maurier's Mrs. Danvers (Rebecca) about her, from her stern demeanor to her seemingly unhealthy devotion to the Abbey. Everything about her is sharp, from her wit to her eyebrows. She can get quite physical with the set, due to her adoration. Proper/upper class accent required.

Role # 4 - Lady Daphne Uptight Submit yourself for this role
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role
Lady Daphne Uptight (30s–40s) is the American wife of Lord Horatio. She does not have a British accent, but speaks in a demur, gentile manner. She is pleasant and kind, although occasionally unaware. Periodically, a heavy American accent slips in — something rougher, sassier, more crass (think Chicago, the Bronx, etc.). There's certainly more to her than meets the eye.

Role # 5 - Honoria Uptight Submit yourself for this role
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role
Honoria Uptight (20s) is the awkward daughter of Lord and Lady Uptight. She lacks style and grace, and any attempts at the same never amount to much. She has trouble with personal space. Honoria would love to be fashionable. She would also love to have the love of Marcus Wainwright, who happens to be her cousin. Awkward, proper/upper class accent required. Strong physical comedy is a plus.

Role # 6 - Gladys Patticake Submit yourself for this role
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role
Gladys Patticake(50s–60s) is the Abbey's animated, feisty cook … with a past. While working class, she carries herself with certain militant air of dignity. She is proud of her culinary skills and usually frustrated by her daft daughter Fern. This actress needs some flexibility with accents, primarily cockney English and French.

She can be flirtatious without realizing it, particularly when potted plants are involved. Cockney accent required.

Role # 8 - Marcus HughWainwrigh Submit yourself for this role
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role
Marcus Hugh Wainwright (30s) is a cousin to the Uptights, and believes he should actually live at — better yet, own — the Abbey. Charming, engaging, dashing, and he knows it. Nearly every move is a pose. He's also homosexual, but not in an overtly flamboyant sense. He can do a lot with a raised eyebrow or a subtle innuendo. Proper/upper class accent required.

Role # 9 - Nurse Agnes Submit yourself for this role
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role
Nurse Agnes Dundlebunny (an indiscriminate age) is a decrepit old woman, although played by a man. She speaks no real lines, but responds to the Duchess with a string of nonsensical, warbling, high-pitched gibberish. It's as if her old lips are so pinched and wrinkled that she can hardly form any real language. Although she's not speaking real words, what she says does convey meaning which only the Duchess can comprehend. She is forever at the Duchess's beck and call.

Role # 10 - Dowager Duchess Submit yourself for this role
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role
The Dowager Duchess Uptight (70s) is also an old woman, a vestige of the Victorian age. She is imposing, imperious, quick-witted, and can cause fear in the stoutest of characters … but she can tuck into a tall glass of sherry with the best of them. The Duchess is a healthy mix of Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, and Lady Bracknell, and she is played by a man. Be true to the character. Proper/upper class accent required.
