Indian-American (son of Indian immigrants, born and raised in the U.S.) Suresh has an enormous IQ. He has artistic and intellectual talents that separate him from everyone else. He is adept at origami, engineering, mathematics, botany. He has a passion for hip hop and has the ability to freestyle (although this skill is not required in the play). He\'s able to mix his creativity with his scientific mind, making him an inventive and rare being. He is verbal. His delivery of his letters is purposeful, percussive, exact. He doesn\'t mumble or muse. He engages. The character of Suresh appeared in an earlier play by Rajiv Joseph, \"Animals Out of Paper\" 10 years ago. Then, the character was 18, and given to more adolescent mood swings. (One doesn\'t need to know that play to understand this one). In \"Letters of Suresh\" he is matured, wiser, but still searching for meaning and connection in the world. Because of his intelligence, he often feels separated from most people he knows, so when he does meet someone he connects with, he tends to be drawn to them immediately, as in the case of Father Hashimoto, the priest with whom he corresponds in this play. His mother died tragically when he was a teenager. He has never truly recovered from this, but he hides his trauma well. He desperately wants to be a good person but wonders if that\'s possible.

Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role
Asian-American (her mother is a Japanese immigrant, her father a Korean immigrant). Melody, raised in Seattle, is someone who once had an exciting creative life but has let it slip away as she's gotten older. She has a loyalty to her parents, who she feels are getting weaker, and so she attends to them, helping them, living near them. As a result, she's enters a sort of mid-life hibernation without knowing it. She was a writer of non-fiction, essays, and has been teaching freshman comp at a local college for the last 12 years. But her own writing has ceased, so her letters to Suresh represent a sort of re-awakening of this talent. As she begins to write to Suresh, she begins to reckon with her own life, her loneliness and isolation, and also spirituality. Her experiences reading Suresh's letters, as well as her journey to Japan for Father Hashimoto's funeral, inspire a spiritual reawakening. She is logical, funny, not given to sentimentality, and so she is taken aback when she does begin to experience emotions deeply. Her letters are probing—she's trying to solve a mystery as to who Suresh is, why his letters have impacted her and her parents...and also who she is.

Role # 3 - Father Hashimoto Submit yourself for this role
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role
Japanese Catholic priest. No accent required. He speaks English well. He is deeply spiritual, attached to his Catholic orthodoxy, but a kind and generous spirit to everyone. He is athletic, even in his 90's. He coaches youth baseball and is beloved by his players. He is the kind of man who makes friends wherever he goes. His letters are always open, descriptive, offering of himself. In his single letter in this play, he is all of these things, but he is also offering something new—something he has never spoken about. And so this letter is different than all the others he has ever written. He has decided to finally share something he's hidden away.
