Theatre Memphis announces Auditions for The Submission

By Jeff Talbott
Directed by
Jerry Chipman
Apr 4–19, 2014 (No Easter Performance) on the Next Stage

A Serious Comedy. A Mid-South premier and a recent off-Broadway hit, this raw, unsentimental, and sometimes fiercely funny play exposes prejudices among young artists one might think more liberal and progressive. A white male playwright submits a race-based play to a national theatre competition, but when it is selected for production, he is faced with producing the fictitious African-American female whose name he invented as the playwright.

A young playwright with a history of middling successes, has written a wonderful new play about an African-American family and their struggles with addiction and impoverishment. Though his plans are to submit the piece to various theater companies, his personal traits give him pause: he’s white, gay, and has no experience to support the validity of his work.
