Talon Knoebel is 13/14 years old. He doesn't really show up until book 2. He did not take the fact that his father was arrested by the government for assisting hybrids (people with technological implants). Hybrids are illegal and if the government finds any, the main computer chip is removed from their brain and usually the hybrid dies within a few days after. If they do survive the removal of the Garrison chip, they are thrown into an interment village for the rest of their life. Any "normals", every day humans with no implants, found aiding and abetting hybrids in any way, shape or form are sentence to prison for life with no chance of parole and no visitation rights. Matter of fact, the government annuls all marriages if one spouse is sentence to prison for helping hybrids and the other spouse is not sentenced.
Talon is bitter at everyone. The government, his mom, his dad, hybrids, his whole family, heck he is probably even bitter and mad at the coca cola delivery man. Talon, his mother, his older brother Kyle had to sell their house and move in with another family just to make ends meet. The other family, the Flints, have the same problem. Mr. Flint and Grandfather Flint were sentence to prison for helping hybrids. Mrs. Flint lives with her mother-in-law, her two boys and rents out rooms to Mrs. Knoebel and her family to help make ends meet.
Talon tends to go down the wrong path. He gets involved with the wrong crowd. He joins a youth gang known as the Red Eyes. Basically they are junior hybrid hunters. They track down hybrids and kill them.
Talon's brother, Kyle, is more of a key player in the series than Talon. However, Talon does play a key part in book 2. (I'm still in the revising stage for book 2 and I am learning new things each day.)
There are times the Red Eyes do the right thing for the wrong reason and wrong things for the right reason. Of course they will do wrong things for the wrong reasons and right things for the right reason as well.
